The holistic revolution
A few years back, I took my first coaching course with a school I’m sure many of you know: the IIN (the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (I’m not sponsored). It’s a great school and course. It’s probably thanks to that course that I learned the meaning of holistic (= according to google: ‘parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole’ or applied to medicine: ‘the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of a disease’) and started understanding that many components of one’s life need to be taken into account in order for a person to be healthy and happy.
The core philosophy of the school was founded on 2 major principles: primary food (relationships, career, exercice, spirituality and of course food) and bio-individuality (every person has unique dietary and lifestyle needs).
The founder of the school Joshua Rosenthal, always said something that went like that: ‘you can eat all the broccoli in the world but if you feel isolated and lonely, you are not going to be living life at full capacity’. It makes sense right?!
What also stayed with me from all these years of Yoga was that in the Vedic texts, they talked about the 5 Koshas (=layers/bodies) :
The annamaya kosha is the physical sheath
The pranamaya kosha is the vital energy, breath, or life force
The manomaya kosha is the mental sheath that represents your mind, emotions and inner world
The vijnanamaya kosha is the astral or psychic body that’s your seat of intuition.
The anandamaya kosha is referred to as the bliss body

They already knew that we are not just a physical body five thousand years ago and I’m sure many more parallels can be found around the world.
My point is that human beings are super complex and the environment in which we live in even more so and there is no quick fix to anything, not even broccoli! We need to look into all those areas of our life and take care of all our ‘bodies’. We need to change the inside before wanting to change the outside and we need to start living in a holistic way now! Is it going to require more effort? Yes! But is it going to be worth it?! Also yes! Are we going to be healthier and happier?! Yes!!! But also it requires work, discipline and awareness in every single moment. I really believe that the next revolution will be a holistic one! Am I on drugs as I’m writing this?! No, don’t worry but this needed to come through today! And it feels good!
